Remebering 9/11

The terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001 changed the nation and altered the course of events in the United States and around the world.  Most of you may be too young to truly remember that day: where you were, what you were doing, how you felt, and how it affected you.  Thus, what I would like you to do is facilitate a discussion regarding 9/11 with someone who does remember (i.e. your parents, an older sibling, an aunt or uncle, or a family friend etc.).  Ask them the following questions:
  • Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
  • How did you feel?
  • What was your immediate reaction?
  • Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
  • In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
After you have had this discussion, report back with your findings by responding to this blog post.  You have until Wednesday, September 14th to complete this assignment.

For this section of the blog I wrote about my dad and how his day went on 9/11.
Zac:So where and how did you here that the twin towers were hit by the planes, and when did you find out it was terrorist.
Dad:I was listening to KMOX on the radio on my wa to my office in Oakville. I had just gotten off of the Meremac bridge. When I had made it to the office we were all jsut standing around with small radios and by the TV just listening about how this had happened.
Zac: What were some of the imediate feelings or reactions you had.
Dad: I mostly had the feelings of anger and sadness, I rode the rest of the way in complete silence and I prayed.
Zac: Was there any thing of that day that you remember very well.
Dad: I had a friend in Boston coming home to MO when all the air flights were delayed beacause of what happened. Also our church had a three hour long prayer meeting that night to just find some light in all of the chaos.
Zac: My final question is in what way in your opinion has America and the world changed in the past 10 years.
Dad: In the time period of then and now I feel that most of the tensions of the Middle East have been rested on the shoulders of America.

This was the discucion between me and my father about the day the towers fell.

    Q. Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
    A. My mom was in Arnold inside a gas station that had a television monitor behind the cashier.

    Q. How did you feel?
    A. She felt like it was not real.

    Q. What was your immediate reaction?
    A. Her immediate reaction was: disbelief, horror, and sadness.

    Q. Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
    A. She thought about how many people worked in the buildings--the reporters kept saying over ten thousand.

    Q. In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
    A. We as citizens feel vulnerable to terrorist attacks and so do citizens in other countries. So now there are many new safety rules for anyone flying on planes.

  3. JONATHAN WILK 2ND HOUR
I was working for a friend of mines construction company and there was a radio on broadcasting the weather forecast when a report broke in saying that a plane had struck one of the twin towers nobody knew for sure if it was on purpose then not any longer then 30 min from then there was a second report that said that another plane had in fact hit the 2nd building. My immediate reaction was fear because jonathan was in pre school at the time and at about the same time the 2nd building was hit the pentagon was also hit and i didnt know what was going to happen next so i left work early went home and stayed attached to the news broadcasts the remains of the day. I felt shocked and angered and scared by this i couldnt find an explanation to why anyone would do this is thousands of innocent people. The one thing that really stuck out about that day after the second tower was hit was the massive rush for gas because everyone thought that gas was going to run out due to this attack. The world has changed quite a bit since the 9/11 attacks. One major difference that sticks out is the security at airports. Before the attacks you didnt have to go through all the metal detectors and body scanners and you didnt have to take your shoes off when going throghh security. The United States economy has really taken a hit since the attacks on the WTC our nation has gone through a minor depression is which has included war agints terrorism in the middle east. Today my family and I took a moment of silence to remember those who died during the horrific attacks on our country and are keeping their families in our prayers. GOD BLESS AMERICA

Here I am going to explain my great-grandmother's experience from 9/11 through my mom.

-Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
My great-garndmother was in Dublin, Ireland while 9/11 occured. (My mom was extremely worried about her while she was in Europe because all the flights to and from the United States were shut down. She was worried about how my great-grandmother would get home.

    -How did you feel?
She felt, of course, extremely worried. All of Dublin was shut down other than the churches.

    -What was your immediate reaction?
Her immediate reacton was sheer shock.

-Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
My great-grandmother specifically remembers how when she was in the streets of Dublin, all the locals came up and hugged them with grief and sorrow for everyone in her tour group.

-In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
I am unable to interview my great grandmother, due to her passing in 2008, but my grandmother lived through and served during WWII and witnessed the sadness and loss from all the wars since then, and felt that the 9/11 attack was a bigger event for America because it threatened our country's saftey. Our country had never been attacked on our soil in such a way before.

I decided to interview my dad.
He was going to refinance the house with my mom when the planes hit.
He was very confused why anybody would do something like that then had an inner anger build up the more he learned about it.
He said his immediate reaction was "let's go get them." He didn't want them getting away with this. He wanted them wiped off the earth.
He said his day went on as planned. He did say that when refinancing the guy offered to move the appointment to another day.
He said the height of security was the main thing he noticed in America. In the world though, it gave everyone a wake up call to what was happening in the middle east. Also caused wars that might not have been as big or happened at all.

I talked to my mom about 9/11 and here are her answers. " Where were you,and what were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?" Her reply was "I was sitting in rush hour traffic listening to the radio and I listened to the whole thing and when the first one hit they though it was an accident, and I thought that was very sad, and once they announced that the second one hit and that it was a terrorist attack.". "how did you feel?" Her reply was " I was sad shocked angry and very scared all at once." "What was you immediate reaction?" Her reply was " I was stunned and I just couldn't believe it, and I began to sob." " Is there anything else in particular that stands out that you can remember?" Her reply was " I remember thinking what's next." " In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?" Her reply was " I think that people show their pride in America more, but they are more suspicious of others." That was my discussion with my mom about the devistating day of September eleventh 2001.

  7. I chose to interview my mom about the 9/11 attacks. She was in the middle of her second hour class at Seckman Middle School, when another teacher, Mrs. Brakemeyer, came by to tell her a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. At first, she didn't believe her. Her initial reaction was to turn on the radio, and she heard a DJ report that the U.S. was under attack. She remembers that there were so many parents coming to pick up their kids from school. She also remembers how eery it was, because the skies were so quiet without any planes traveling. She remembers feeling unsafe for the first time in her life, and worrying about me in preschool. As for changes, she feels the increase in security does not increase her feeling of safety. The fact that something like this happened to the U.S. has profoundly affected the world's idea of security. She does find that there is an increase in patriotism for many people and an increase in respect for military members. A positive change from the feelings of the Vietnam era.

    Q. How did you feel?
    A. She felt like it was unbeleivable.

    Q. What was your immediate reaction?
    A. Horror, sadness, disbelief

    Q. Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?

    Q. In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
    A. The average citizen feels vulnerable to a terrorist attack--this is not a war with soldiers vs. soldiers. Also more rules for the average flyer and security scanning.

A:People really weren't aware of how devasating a terrorist attack could be until it happened in the United States. Today everyone in the U.S. is more aware of terrorism and how serious it can be.

I talked to my older sister about 9/11. She said, "She was in the car on the way to school when she heard it on the radio". She wasn't quite old enough to know what exactly happened she just knew something serious had just went on.She said, "that it was a normal day, getting up, getting ready, and going to school". She thinks that the people in New York in particular have gotten closer. The airline security has become stricter and more people have lost their lives fighting for this country.

Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks? My mom was in a federal building in downtown St.Louis at a meeting.

How did you feel? My mom felt overwhelmed, fearful about the future for my children, and utter disbelief about what had happened.

What was your immediate reaction? My mom was shocked that America had been attacked on its own soil.

Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember? My mom remembers that everything stopped for the next few days.

In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result? My mom thinks that we are much more cautious and fearful. Also, that we have a renewed respect for the military.

Q: In what ways do you think that America, and the world for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result ?
A: I think that there is obviously an increase in security at airports, we don't take our security systems for granted, and we all have the fear of another attack in the back of our minds.

The following is a dialogue between me and my mom about September 11, 2001:

ME: "Where were you and what were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?"
MOM: "I was working from home in the basement of our old house and I went upstairs to get a coffee and happened to turn on the news. There it was, all over every channel."

    ME: "How did you feel?"
MOM: "Shocked because I had never witnessed anythin like this in my lifetime. I just couldn't believe it. I also felt very helpless because obviously there was nothing I could do."

ME: "What was your immediate reaction?"
MOM: "My immediate reaction was to call my mom and dad and your dad to mke sure that they knew what was going on. After that I immediately started praying. I felt that was the only possible way that I would be able to help with the situation."

ME: "Is there anything else in particular that you remember about that day?"
MOM: "Honestly the main thing I remember is watching it constantly on the news the entire day. I also remember when you came home from preschool and asked me and dad what movie we were watching - we were watching the news. And in the week following the incident, my company wrote emergency contact reports for all those whom our company associated with that were killed in the Twin Towers."

ME: "In what ways do you think that America, an the world for that matter, have changed in the past ten years as a result?"
MOM: "Security has severely increased and people are more afraid and judgemental especiallt towards Muslims. I think these things have been happening worldwide."

For the 9/11 blog I asked my mom these questions.

Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?

Mom:"I was at my desk at work. I was logging in the daily invoices in my computer. I heard my boss tell my other boss that a plane had hit the World Trade Center.

    How did you feel?

Mom: "At first I felt shocked and alarmed. Soon after I that I cried. And I was very scared."

    What was your immediate reaction?

Mom: "Shocked and alarmed. I could feel heat come from the back of my neck!"

Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?

Mom: "I tried to make several phone calls and the recording said 'We're sorry all circuits are busy now. Please try again later.' On the way home from work, I saw all the gas stations were extremely full. There was a line of cars beginning from the road to the station. I tried getting gas later that evening, but most of the pumps were shut down at different gas stations in town. At home I turned on the T.V. and it was non-stop news reports about the terrorist attacks. Every channel was reporting the news and regular programming did not resume for days. The news clips of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers shown repeatedly every few minutes. News coverage was around-the-clock."

In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?

Mom: "Airport security has been changed a lot since then. It has been more secure, at times, for the country's good but also the expanded security--some of it has become unnecessary. The attacks have also fueled paranoia in this country and around the world since then. Terrorist attacks have also taken place in other countries along the same lines as the September 11 attacks."

For this blog post I asked my mom the following questions, and here were her answers:

Q1 - Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
A1 - "I was teaching a Supervisor training class at my job. Someone came in the conference room and said that New York was being attacked my terrorists."

Q2 - How did you feel?
A1 - "I was very worried. I did not get details immediately so I really wanted to end the class and go find a TV."

Q3 - What was your immediate reaction?
A3 - "Eventually people started coming in the room and telling us about the attacks. No one could concentrate on the training so I canceled class and we brought a TV into the conference room. Everyone watched what was happening in horror. Some of us cried...we were all scared."

Q4 - Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
A4 - "I was working at the largest chemical plant in the St. Louis area. We were contacted by the FBI and told to evacuate the plant. At that point no one knew how far the attacks would spread and our plant would be a likely target for terrorists if they wanted to hurt a lot of people in St. Louis. I just wanted to get home to my family, I felt like we were at war."

Q5 - In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
A5 - "I feel like many people became more patriotic and stopped taking the greatness of our country for granted. We also became less trusting...I know I am more careful and suspicious of people who are acting a little weird...I hate to say it, but especially if they appear to be from another country. The biggest change that impacted me was the security measures at airports."

    She felt scared and sad.

Her teacher had told her class what had happened, and explained it to them.

All she could remember was that it was her friend Garrett's birthday and that they were eating snacks for his birthday.

Q:Where were you and what were were you doing when you found out about the terrorist attacks?
A: I was doing the dishes and your dad called and told me that I needed to turn on the TV. And while, i was talking to him on the phone, thats when the second plane hit. I saw the live footage on TV.

    Q: How did you feel?
A: I was horrified. I just sat there and cried. I couldn't believe that something that horrible would happen. And when they told us it had been a terrorist attack I think that the entire nation just went into shock.

    Q:What was your immediate reaction?
A: I just sat there and watched the TV all day. The only time I left the house that day was to pick you up from pre-school and i got into the office and all of the teachers were just standing there watching the news. I think that everyone just felt helpless because all that we could do was watch what was happening on TV and see people experience it first hand.

Q: Is there anything else in particular about the day that stands out or that you can remember?
A: I think at one point I had to turn the TV off because I just couldn't watch it anymore.

Q: In what ways do you think that America, and the World for that matter, have changed in the past 10 years as a result?
A: I think things changed right after it happened because there was like security alerts and huge amounts of people that volunteered at grounds zero. And all the people that donated to help others in need. I think that people were angry because of how easy it was for these people to get these planes so easily. It makes you wonder how a nation or another group of people could do that to another group of people. Everywhere you went after that People had flags everywhere and it showed other nations that we weren't going to let something like this tear us apart. I think patriotism was a big thing after that.

Q: Did you personally know anyone who was at ground zero that day?
A: There was a cast member from a Disney Store in Boston who was on the first plane that hit. I didn't know her personally but she was part of the Disney family. She was on her way to Disney Land for the first time in her life so it affected all of the Disney Family a lot. All of the stores handed out USA pins in honor of her. I just think it was terrible because she was going to the Happiest place on Earth and thats what happened to her.

    Q: Anything Else?
A: Its just that i think when people remember 9/11 they think about the tours being hit and sort of set aside the fact that the pentagon was also hit and the passengers that overthrew the hijacters to prevent the plane from reaching its destination. And I think that one was headed for the white house so I think that the people on that plane arent recognized as much as they should because they are heroes too.
